In 1798, more neophytes escaped, leaving only about thirty-five at the mission. The friars were distraught. The mission's lands were overflowing with water. The livestock were dying. To top it all off, a dead whale washed up on the beach that year. The whale's carcass attracted an unusually large number of wolves and bears, which posed a threat to the farm animals in the area. Mission Santa Cruz, whose beginnings had held such promise, would never truly recover from the setbacks suffered during this time.
